Title:
Making God Your Shelter
Desired Outcomes:
The aim of this uGroup is to help members stand on God’s Word, rather than believing some un-biblical falsehoods they’ve decided about themselves, their lives, or their situations.
Core Scriptures:
- Matthew 8:20-22
- 2 Corinthians 1:8-10
- Acts 12:6-19 - Story of Peter in captivity
Welcome:
Any fun and welcoming Icebreaker that gets the members moving, on their feet, where all the members can participate in. If there are new members be careful not to create a space where they feel exposed or uncomfortable.
Word:
Start the discussion by explaining what a shelter is and how often we run to find shelter. Even subconsciously.
Questions:
- How often do our problems and circumstances cause us to run to certain people or habits to feel safe? Are these shelters safe? Are they able to completely protect us against our problems or are they temporary fixes?
- What are you holding on to?
Statements:
- This is necessary to think about because of the things we hold on to and the things we run to have power over us.
- If you find shelter in worldly things it will manifest in your daily life and in your circumstances and outcomes. The outcome you get will be limited and inefficient.
- When we run to other things and habits to find shelter then we are rejecting God and closing the door for Him to come and move.
- A shelter is a place where we find rest and seek protection, so if we run to worldly things and not God for rest and protection then it will not last or be effective.
- God will send you out of your shelter into the storm so that you will find shelter in Him in the midst of the storm. When we find shelter in other things we run from our storm in an attempt to forget or be distracted. But when we find shelter in the Lord we will be strengthened and filled with peace and be able to move past the storm and grow!
- What we find shelter in will determine our growth.
Explain how important it is to find shelter in the Lord and in His presence.
- How we find shelter in the Lord?
Encourage them to think and explain why we need to constantly seek shelter in the Lord. To constantly seek shelter in the Lord we strengthen ourselves to rather run to the Lord when things get difficult, as it will keep us from seeking shelter in worldly habits, actions, and other people.
